Gloucester Academy

Unit 1 Assessment fortnight - Year 9

Dear GA Families

We are writing to share with you your child’s end of Unit 3 Assessment timetable which starts from Monday 20th November.  We are also writing to give you information about how you can support your child to succeed in these assessments.

Assessment overview

The first assessment cycle of this academic year is coming up. Your child will set a series of KIP assessments (Knowledge is Power) in each subject, which will allow them to show their learning from the last academic year. Assessments will take place in their usual lessons between Monday 20th November and Friday 1st December 2023.

What are the KIP assessments?

  • The assessment is made up of 50 words from your child’s Knowledge Organiser for each subject for this unit.
  • They are made up from the words they study at the beginning of every lesson as a ‘KIP quiz’ and practise every day as part of their homework.
  • Students with additional needs will have had the support they need to access the test so they are not at a disadvantage.

What happens after the assessments?

  • We will reset the classes for Unit 2 to ensure that students are accessing the right support to progress even further.
  • You will receive a report with the overview of their percentage in each KIP subject, their rank, the progress that your child has made.
  • If your child misses an assessment, they will receive a zero score for that assessment, which will affect their setting for the next unit. Attendance during the assessment weeks is crucial.

How can I support my child to prepare for the assessments?

  • Encourage them to complete their daily Knowledge Organiser homework in their homework book
  • Encourage them to make flashcards for the terms in the Knowledge Organiser that they don’t remember - they can collect flashcards from their Head of Key Stage
  • Test them on the terms and definitions on these flashcards
  • Ensure your child knows what assessments they have on what days using the timetable below (they will also have this printed)

What homework do students do in weeks 11,12 & 13?

  • During these weeks your child’s Homework practice book will be used to practise any definitions from their Knowledge Organiser that they do not know. They are able to choose the subject they wish to study each day, and are not required to follow their usual Knowledge Organiser homework timetable.

We look forward to studying and celebrating with you soon.

Yours sincerely

Mr M Davies

Assistant Head
